A good sketchbook is crucial for beginning students. I highly recommend one with a spiral binding.
The page weight, and ability to accept many media allow us to explore in both wet and dry. These are the three that I found that I like. I recommend the pocket sized AND one of the 9X12 (either 9X12 will do):
1.Alpha mixed media premium 3.5 X 5.5"
2.One of these sketchbooks:
Blending graphite and chalks is achieved with a variety of tools. You will want to avoid getting skin oils on your work. I use a cotton rag. Or, place a clean sheet of paper, or paper towel between your hand and your work, to keep it from smudging. I keep a roll of regular paper-towels in my gear. For blending, I use one of my cleaned old paintbrushes. A small paintbrush, corners of a tissue, makeup applicators, cotton swabs are all effective tools. Students experience Wet graphite. I carry a bottle of water to dampen brushes and make washes. Any container can be used for holding a small cup of water.
Students will need:
1.Art Alternatives blend Stumps ASST 6pk
2.Art Alternatives tortillon Stumps ASST 6pk
3.Select Petite Oval Mop Brush 1/4"
4.Select Petite Oval Mop 1/2"
5.Pro dust brush 14"
6.Y&C Hake Brush 1"
If you haven’t experienced erasers yet, you may find a better experience with one you haven’t tried. I have a few that I carry in addition to the class list. Pencil erasers (erasures that are pencils) can be pointed to make and erase fine marks. I have one with a vinal and another with a pink inside the casings. I work with the other 4 listed below. Students should have:
1.Generals Art Eraser Set (3)
2.Prismacolor kneaded rubber eraser large
All pencil sharpeners are not the same. I use a variety of pointers and sharpeners. A piece of fine sandpaper is very useful to clean and point pencils and erasers, blending stumps and tortillon. Your sharpener must capture the shavings in its container to avoid the mess And capture the graphite for use in washes. I own a multi-function four-hole pencil sharpener. Other distant seconds will do.
1.Blackwing Two-step Long-point Sharpener
2.art alternatives sanding pointer
Various graphite can make huge differences in how or work looks. This can be achieved with use of different hardness or softness of the same medium. In my kit are a variety of pencils. My must haves are a 6B (w/o a casing), 8B (w/o a casing), and the following pencil w/ casings: 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, 4H and a HB Charcoal pencil.
Students should begin with these materials for class:
1.Winsor and newton charcoal vine soft (3)
2.Winsor and newton charcoal vine Medium (3)
3.Winsor and newton charcoal vine Hard (3)
4.General's Kimberly pencil set of 12
I have a set of Art-n-fly pencil extenders that are light and extremely portable. Pencil extenders are crucial as we begin to use up our casing.
I use a huge Drawing board. It allows me to work on very big work or affix more than one project at a time. I often tape multiple pages of newsprint to it and use it as a flip chart style, folding each page over the top as I switch from pose to pose in short studies. My board has a hole as a handle to carry it and two very sturdy clips. Instead of the rubber-band hold down, I have customized mine with a boot-lase connected and tied through the handle (so it doesn’t get lost). I can tie down 100 or more sheets if needed.
Students will need one no smaller than Artists alternatives tote board 18 X 18”.
These art supplies are the ones that I have experienced as the best options to start with. The items that I personally use are not mandatory for class except what I have in the numbered and bulleted list. This is a comprehensive list that includes more affordable quality gear required in my classes. Plaza Arts, is my local store to save shipping. All items on the numbered and bulleted list are available at Plaza Arts. The descriptions can be internet searched for other options.

Graphite Outings Supplies
This is a list of the supplies that I bring with me when I do graphite pencil work in plein air.
A good spiral spine multimedia sketchbook with Acid free archival paper. I choose a smooth finish when working with pencils because the texture of most cold press papers makes it a task to shade. I have a YouTube video that shows the actual gear I carry. For the workshops and classes, I recommend something 11X14 or larger. If you are working from an easel, you will need a platform (drawing board) and tape to tape the work to the board. Or you can work on your lap in a sketchbook. I bring a stool so I can sit for the hours it takes.
Sketchbook (s)
Tape
Drawing-board
Clean cotton rag or paper towels
A few blending stumps and Tortillon
Eraser shield
White vinyl eraser and eraser pen(s)
Clear Plastic ruler
drafting or dusting brush
4-hole sharpener
Pointer
Drawing pencils 4h, 2h, hb, 2b, 4b, 6b, 8b
Fine tip mechanical pencil
If you’re planning to come outside, please be prepared with layered clothing, sunscreen and bug spray. Don’t forget your lunch or at least bottled water. There may or may not be a bathroom facility.
